Fay XC Defeats Strong Fenn Team (11-1 Season Record)

After losing to Fenn by only four points last week, the Fay harriers were eager to take on the strong squad on their own turf in Concord. The Fenn course is true cross country: 2.1 miles of winding, hilly trails through the woods. Wednesday was a perfect day for a race with temperatures in the low 60s, and we were happy to have our 9th graders back with us after their week of school visits.

Once the race began, the runners disappeared into the woods for most of the race. At that point, it was simply a waiting game for those red jerseys to appear again! About ten minutes later, co-captains Shivam Sharma '15 and Andrew Daphnis '15 emerged from the woods with a Fenn runner about 10 yards behind them. Co-captain Jack Thalmann '15 and Jonathan Walker '15 were only about twenty seconds behind the leaders at this point as well. These top 4 runners ended up finishing in this same order, for 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th places. At this point, our team score was entirely dependent on our 5th runner. Fenn had a strong group of boys finish between 6th and 11th place. However, thanks to a strong team rivalry between Noah Traylor '14 and John Namgung '15, these boys sprinted to the finish line and ended up crossing within one second of each other for 11th and 12th place overall. Noah was our 5th runner across the line and rounded out our team score of 23 points. 

Other notable performances of the day came from Alfonso Pelaez '15, who finished in 15th place overall, and Sally Lee who was the 3rd girl across the finish line. 

The Fay Team is now looking ahead to our first championship meet next week: The Larz Anderson Invitational in Brookline (for our 7th and 8th graders). Wish them luck!
